CEEKAY JONES - INTERVIEW

Matt Racks: At what age did you decide music was your career path?

CeeKay Jones: I don't think it was ever a decision. I think life choose it for me. I grew up with dreams of being an Olympic athlete. Both my parents were professional ski racers and my mother was a member of the US Ski Team. So naturally I was wanting to follow in their foot steps, and I did so until my early 20s. After becoming a pro snowboarder I started messing around free styling on beats while I was traveling to contests. That was the start, but it was when I blew both my knees out and I was in rehab mode that music found me. I was like 20 at that point and I just ended up messing around jamming with some friends and it turned into a semi successful band. That was my starting point.

Matt Racks: Your music is hard to lock into a certain genre...how do you classify it?

CeeKay Jones: That's a tough one. People always feel like they need to categorize or label something to understand it. I have a hard time with that. I love some many styles of music and have influences from all over the map. I just try to write music in the moment. So each song can turn out differently depending on how I'm feeling. I'd be bored if all I could do was write raps about the same thing over n over. It's all about progression for me so my music changes and grows lyrically and sonically as I do.

Matt Racks: You can be linked to many major artist in the game...who has been your favorite artist to collab with?

CeeKay Jones: Man, that's tough to answer cause I have been blessed to work with so many amazing people. If I had to choose one that stands out though it would be doing the song "No Problem" with Mad Lion & KRS One. I had toured with KRS a few times with my band opening up for him back in the day, but when that song came together it was dope. I'm a huge fan of both Mad Lion and KRS so it was an honor.

Matt Racks: The world knows you as a musician and model...any plans to hit the silver screen?

CeeKay Jones: I'd love to do movies and TV acting. If I get the chance I'll definitely do it.

Matt Racks: Can we confirm rumors that Producer Nigel Star is your brother?

CeeKay Jones:  That is very true, he's my younger brother. We are a team and I've done 90% of my solo music with him. He's super talented as well as his girlfriend and production partner Runway Star. Together they go by "THE MAKERZ" and produce amazing music for lots of dope artists.
Matt Racks: Anyone who has caught a CeeKay Jones show knows you got moves but can you "Dougie"?

CeeKay Jones: LMAO, not gonna answer that.

Matt Racks: Favorite country to tour in?

CeeKay Jones: I love Canada, but it's hard to say one favorite. I've been all over the world and it's just dope to see all the cultures.

Matt Racks: Any projects in the works that our readers can look out for?

CeeKay Jones: Yeah, my debut solo music. I just dropped the first single "BANGIN ON THE WALLS" ft. Ruthless. It's available world wide on the web, and the the video for the song will be released in the first week on January 2013. I'm gonna be releasing a ton of music this coming year. I'm also doing a side project with my friend Christian Nyguen called "DESPITE WAR" which is a Hardcore band. I'm singing with that group, but the whole band lives in Switzerland so I'm gonna fly over there next summer and play shows with them as well as do my solo touring along with. Gonna be a busy year. Lol

Matt Racks: While in the band "Tabularasa" you were known to consume large amounts of thc...whats your favorite strain?

CeeKay Jones: HAHAHAHAHA, OG KUSH !!!

Matt Racks: What record label would make the ideal home for CeeKay Jones?

CeeKay Jones: A label that's willing to let me have creative control and that supports my career. Labels are almost not needed these days. If you can finance your self then you can side step them all together. I guess the best label would be "My Own" lol

Matt Racks: Fitness has always been very important to you...is it hard to stay in shape while on the road?

CeeKay Jones: It can be for sure. What's more difficult is eating good. I'm super active on stage so I get a good workout every night I perform. You just gotta stay focused and not let the daily repetition turn you sluggish.

Matt Racks: What hip hop artist would you like to collab with in the future?

CeeKay Jones: I've always wanted to work with Cee-Lo. He's been one of my favorite artist since I was 14 and he was doing the first Goodie Mob record. I dig how he does all kinds of musical styles and progresses. I've definitely learned from watching him evolve.

Matt Racks: What was your very first tattoo?

CeeKay Jones: Lol, a crappy Celtic calf piece that I got done at a friends house when I was 16.

Matt Racks: You are known as the "Gucci Punk", how did that come about?

CeeKay Jones: It's a moniker that best describes me. I am a high fashion cat with a Punk Rock mind state and way of doing things.

Matt Racks: What city do you call home?

CeeKay Jones: Right now I call Los Angeles home.

Matt Racks: If you had your own reality TV show, what would it be called and why?

CeeKay Jones: Man, I really dislike reality TV shows so I'd probably rather do a Documentary on my musical journey or something like that. I'd be down to do one of those Travel Channel type shows. Maybe do one where I travel the world in a quest to find the best of something. I don't know what it would be though lol

Matt Racks: If you had to survive off 3 hip hop albums for the rest of your life, which would they be?

CeeKay Jones: Goodie Mob "Soul Food", Fat Joe "Jealous Ones Envy", Method Man "Tical", but that's really hard to make that decision. There's so many dope records. They would all be from the 80's n 90's era of Hip Hop though.

Matt Racks: Alltime favorite sneakers?

CeeKay Jones: I'm a shoe whore, that's way to hard to narrow into one favorite.

Matt Racks: Is there a Ms. Jones?

CeeKay Jones: Nahhhh, not yet at least. Music is my "Ms. Jones"

Matt Racks: Any pet peeves when it comes to the music industry?

CeeKay Jones: I have a bunch. Artists that follow the herd is one. In a world where u can do & be as creative & individual as you want, why would you just wanna do something or sound like someone else. Doesn't make sence to me. The pop music business is lame. The way it's run is my biggest peeve.
